The New Wave of Horror Comics

Post Mortem Comic Studios has launched a new line of independent horror comics, joining stories from the Southern Horror Writers Association with talented artists from all over the world.
John Parker, based in North Carolina, has been laying the groundwork for the studio for the past year, excited by the major changes in the industry and comics distribution.
“It’s always been my dream to be in comics,” said Parker, whose background is in writing, music, tattoo art, and graphic design. “Any aspect you want to go for, art’s my life.”

Parker enlisted the services of Scott Nicholson, a novelist known primarily for his Southern Appalachian supernatural thrillers. Nicholson began adapting his own stories after enjoying writing screenplay versions of his work.
“I grew up on comics like ‘Weird War Tales’ and ‘Tales from the Crypt,’ and those are my first horror memories,” Nicholson said. “By the time I was 5, I was making my own comic books and cartoon strips. To see your words jump off the page through the vision of a talented artist is incredibly satisfying.”
Post Mortem’s initial releases are scheduled for May 1, with Dirt #1 and a one-shot called “The Magic Eight Ball.” A 250-copy special advance edition of each will be followed by a large off-set print run of at least 3,000 copies, with color covers and 24-page black-and-white interiors.

Other horror titles in development include the anthology “Grave Conditions,” the “Fever” series, and the “Ink” series. U.K. painter David Magitis is supplying many of the covers, and Kewber Alves, Eric Geier, Michael Kellar and others are contributing art.

Post Mortem’s goal is to publish original, challenging titles that reach beyond the cliches of the genre, eventually expanding into digital and color editions. The studio also aims to be the most creator-friendly studio around, respecting the skills and rights of contributors while sharing profits from the books.

HESKE HORROR’S “BONE CHILLER” HAS 8 GREAT SCARES
Indie horror anthology available as trade paperback

(Boston, MA – February 18, 2009)  The writer of THE NIGHT PROJECTIONIST, the anticipated vampire series by publisher Studio 407 with film rights optioned by Myriad Pictures (Jeepers Creepers 2), stirs up suburban scares with BONE CHILLER, a trade paperback anthology culled from R.M. Heske’s COLD BLOODED CHILLERS series.

What makes these stories ring so terrifyingly close to home is that the monsters aren’t zombies, werewolves or vampires … they are US.

If you are looking for a killer in a mask, look elsewhere. These Tales of
Suburban Murder and Malice are happening next door.

There's an edge of Twilight Zone with a twist of Alfred Hitchcock about
Heske's Cold Blooded Chillers. And the art is stunningly beautiful,
reminiscent of the horror art of the past.

While Heske pens all the stories, each tale is drawn by different artists who each bring a unique voice (except for Zeu who eerily illustrates False Pretenses and Dead Dog). The 140-page anthology features a forward by Rod Lott (www.bookgasm.com) and includes three “themed” sections – Femme Fatales, Distrust Thy Neighbor, and Someone is Watching (stories with a supernatural bent). Also included are two chilling extras: Alibi, a short film script with spot illustrations by Reno Maniquis of Walls of Angels fame (who also illustrates Transcendence in the book), and a micro comic called Shopper’s Nightmare drawn by Breno Tamura and lettered by David Paul.

Preston Asevedo provides a creepy Grim Reaper cover and artwork for The Waiting Room, a Jacobs Ladder-esque tale that was adapted into a short film starring Richard Schiff and Izabello Miko. Other contributing artists include Mark Chilcott, Jay Fife, Alain Norte, Dirk Shearer, and Adam Swiecki.

Although relatively new, Heske’s Cold Blooded Chillers has received strong reviews from some of the most prestigious comic and horror sites, as well as coverage on USA Today and Reuters. “These tales take me back to the independent horror comics of the early 90's that featured interesting tales and up-and-coming artists,” says Rob Caprilozzi at ComicMonsters.com. “Robert Heske has found his niche in this sub-genre of horror that is often forgotten.”

BONE CHILLER is available for $12 (plus shipping and handling) at www.coldbloodedchillers.com or IndyPlanet.com.
