STARVE BETTER: SURVIVING THE ENDLESS HORROR OF THE WRITING LIFE

Nick Mamatas and Apex Publishing Join Forces to Tell the Dirty Truth of Life as a Writer

[Lexington, KY – September 18, 2009] STARVE BETTER is a writing handbook with a difference—no promises of bestsellerdom, no feeding the dangerous daydreams aspiring writers have. This book is about survival: how to generate ideas when you needed them yesterday, writing dialogue and developing plot on the quick, and most important of all, what the competition in the slush piles of the world looks like. For non-fiction writers, STARVE BETTER offers writing techniques such as how to get (relatively) high-paying assignments in second and third-tier magazines, and how to find gigs that pay NOW as the final notices pile up and the mice eat the last of the pasta in the cupboard.

Humor, essays, and some of the most widely read blog pieces from Nick Mamatas, award-nominated author and editor, come together for the first time in a writers’ guide that won’t teach anyone how to get rich and famous…but will impart the most valuable skill in the business: how to starve better.

STARVE BETTER: SURVIVING THE ENDLESS HORROR OF THE WRITING LIFE releases from Apex Publications in summer 2010. Updates and information available at www.apexbookcompany.com.

Bram Stoker Award Winner Mike Oliveri Launches THE PACK, a New Multi-volume, Cross-platform Horror Fiction Series
Will produce original horror fiction and graphic novels for print and digital media.Special Kindle edition of the first fiction book in the series, THE PACK: WINTER KILL, will be released in October, followed by a trade paperback edition in November.

CRYSTAL LAKE, ILLINOIS, September 19, 2009 — Evileye Books today announced the launch of THE PACK, a new horror series created by writer and Bram Stoker Award winner, Mike Oliveri.

THE PACK title serves as the brand platform for the series of prose fiction books and original graphic novels to be produced by Mr. Oliveri and published by Evileye Books.

The first book to launch under THE PACK platform is THE PACK: WINTER KILL, a novella that blends horror, noir and thriller elements to explore new territories in the werewolf mythos. The book will debut in October exclusively on Amazon's Kindle and Kindle for iPhone, followed in November by the official trade paperback cover edition for online and bookstore distribution. The second book in the series is an original graphic novel titled, CHIMAERA, to be released in spring 2010.Under the terms of the publishing agreement, Mr. Oliveri will write one prose fiction book and one graphic novel each year.

"THE PACK is an offshoot of my fascination with the werewolf legends," said Mr. Oliveri. "The potential to explore the generational histories and clashes between the family members and the changing world just seems limitless. With my prose roots, I know the themes can be presented in a thrilling, narrative way. But werewolf stories are also so visually rich—especially in their violent attack and battle scenes—that I wanted to explore the graphic potential of my stories as well. With THE PACK series of fiction and graphic novels, I'll be able to explore facets of the werewolf mythos that have largely gone unexplored."

Brian Keene, best-selling horror scribe, calls THE PACK: WINTER KILL "a masterful blend of crime, suspense and the supernatural."

"THE PACK is huge, epic and ambitious," said A.N. Ommus, Editorial Director of Evileye Books. "Mike Oliveri's take on werewolves throws out the tired stereotype of the man overcome by the physical transformation and the uncontrollable violent urges to kill and moves the legends into new territory, posing new questions and possibilities. Yet, Mike still delivers the gore and action hardcore horror fans crave."

MIke Oliveri is the author of the Bram Stoker Award-winning novel, "Deadliest of the Species". His horror fiction has appeared in critically acclaimed editions of "Brimstone Turnpike," "New Dark Voices" and "Dark Arts," among others. Oliveri has also written the comic book limited series, "Werewolves: Call of the Wild" and contributed a short story to "The Phantom Chronicles".

"Mike Oliveri writes with an audacious and unflinching style guaranteed to punch you in the guts and get you coughing blood." --Tom Piccirilli, author of "Shadow Season" and "The Cold Spot".

Evileye Books publishes fiction and graphic novels within the genres of horror, dark fantasy and science fiction.

‘VAMPIRE APOCALYPSE' SERIES OPTIONED FOR GRAPHIC NOVEL New Baby Productions Enters the Horror Genre with Adaptation of Derek Gunn's Hit Novels

Bloomfield Township, MI, September 14, 2009: Publisher New Baby Productions announces that a graphic novel adaptation of Derek Gunn's acclaimed Vampire Apocalypse novel series is in the works. "I'm really thrilled with this new direction as I always felt that (Vampire Apocalypse) really lends itself to this format," stated Gunn. Vampire Apocalypse was published in September 2006, and has been optioned by producer/screenwriter Richard Finney to be a feature film. A script has already been penned by Finney and Franklin Guerrero Jr. Fallout, the third book in the series, will be released this October from Black Death Books.

According to Gunn, "The stories are set in the near future in a world grown insular after a brief war has left the world depleted of resources. Fuel is rationed, states close their borders, communities die, and technology stagnates. As the world struggles to cope with these problems, the vampires come from the shadows and quietly begin to take over community-after-community. They offer power to those who will join them, and death to those who don't. It doesn't take long and, after a brutal but brief war, they take control. They use a serum and Thralls to control the population, wall the cities off, and breed humans as stock. The Thralls are humans who have been bitten but have not fully become vampires. They have enhanced speed and strength and guard the vampires during the day when they could be vulnerable."
"In recent pop culture, vampires have been turned into beings that should be loved. Derek Gunn returns vampires to the blood-thirsty dangerous monsters that they should be," stated New Baby Publisher Eric Mullarky. "This is the perfect story to launch New Baby into the horror genre."
This new adaptation will be scripted by CJ Hurtt, an eclectic writer whose work has run the gamut from mainstream to horror to slipstream to political drama. His horror prose has been published in Lighthouse Magazine and Horrorfind.com; and his comic work has been showcased in the political drama One Last Song published by Brainscan Studios. He is the current Fiction Editor of Dark Recesses Magazine.

Assisting on the writing duties will be Gunn, an Irish author whose work has been widely praised on both sides of the Atlantic. His latest novel, The Estuary, was released in June 2009, and has been receiving some great reviews, including commendations from Fangoria, Flamesrising.com, and Horrornews.net. Gunn is a member of the International Thriller Writers Association and the Horror Writers Association.

Argentinean artist Federico Combi will be providing the art for the graphic novel. Combi fancies himself a "Fine Arts Technician;" an illustrator and artist specialized in multiple concepts and artistic esthetics: fantasy art, pin ups, stories, children's albums, youth novels, adult novels, paleo art, comics, and storyboards. He has worked for producers on several continents. Mullarky said that "Frederico's realistic painted style will bring a unique visualization to this project that you will not want to miss."
Vampire Apocalypse: the Graphic Novel is scheduled for an early 2011 release. A mini-comic preview edition will be available at various conventions during 2010 to start the pre-release marketing. Project updates will be posted on the New Baby Productions web site.

New Baby Productions is an independent comic book publisher formed in 2008 by Eric Mullarky with the intent to self-publish his Elemental Fources series. The follow-up series, Elemental Fources: Brothers in Arms, will be released in 2010.
