INTERVIEWS: - BARBIE WILDE

WHO: BARBIE WILDE
MOVIE: HELLRAISER 2 - FEMALE CENOBITE, DEATH WISH 3,

Can you tell our Horrornews readers a brief synopsis of what Sister Cilice is about?

A woman is placed in a convent against her will and fantasizes about power, domination, sensuality and freedom -- all the things that are forbidden to her.  She finds a key to the Schism that can bring forth the Order of the Gash and she fearlessly summons the Cenobites, who are astounded at her willingness to trade her humanity for infernal, eternal sensation.

How did you get involved with writing this short story for Hellbound Hearts?

I’d met Paul Kane through his interviews with me for his book, ‘The Hellraiser Films and Their Legacy’.  He invited me to a British Fantasy Society get-together and I met Marie O’Regan there.  They invited me to submit a story, and I have to admit, I was a bit dubious, because my field of expertise in writing is really crime, not horror, but one night ‘Sister Cilice’ popped into my head and that was it.  I think it took me a week to write and edit the story.

I’m hearing all kind of great things about your story.  What kind of writing background do you have?

Well, I’ve been writing stories for many years now and I’ve finished a novel entitled ‘The Venus Complex’, which is still looking for a publisher to understand it.  It’s a fictionalized journal of a man who makes the decision to lose control and become a serial killer.  But it’s also a very angry, sexy, funny book. My tagline is: “Enter into Michael's world through the pages of his personal journal, where every diseased thought, disturbing dream, politically incorrect rant and sexually explicit murder highlights his journey from zero to psycho.”

Here’s a link to more info about ‘The Venus Complex’, including a review of the book by Paul Kane, the editor of ‘Hellbound Hearts’:
http://www.barbiewilde.com/VenusComplex.html

I’ve also written the scripts for most of the TV shows that I’ve presented over the years: ‘The American Hot 100’, ‘Music Box’, ‘Hold Tight’,  ‘The Small Screen’, ‘The Gig’, etc.

What inspired you to write Sister Cilice?

Paul suggested that I might want to explore the world of the Cenobites from a feminine perspective.  After all, the Lead Cenobite in Clive Barker’s novella, ‘The Hellbound Heart’, (the basis for all the Hellraiser films) was female.  Since we had to use the novella as source material, rather than the films, it was fascinating to re-read ‘The Hellbound Heart’ again.  So simple, yet so complex . . . and beautifully written as well.

Are you planning on writing anything else?

At the moment, I’m working on an erotic vampire novel.   There does seem to be a mountain of vampire stuff out there at the moment, but my story has a very different take on the subject.

What other short stories from Hellbound Hearts should we look forward too?

Can you believe it, I haven’t had a chance to read all of the stories yet as I’ve only just received a copy of the book.  So far, I loved the Pete Atkins story ‘Prisoners of the Inferno’ and my fellow Cenobite Nicholas Vince’s story, ‘Demon’s Design’.  I’m really looking forward to reading the rest of the stories soon.

Do you ever see any of your old Hellraiser Hellbound co-stars?

We periodically meet up at horror conventions and we always have a great time together.

What is your fondest memory from back when you made Hellraiser Hellbound?

Well, my fondest memories have to be meeting Doug, Simon, Nicko, Ken, Ashley and Clare.  (Although I spent much more time with my fellow Cenobites because of the make-up and costume preparation.) The make-up and costume crew were fantastic . . . funny and very patient. And of course, meeting Pete Atkins and Clive was pretty cool, as well.

The actual filming process was pretty exhausting, because we had very early calls for make-up and costume, then we had to wait around for hours, then sporadic bits of filming, then taking off the make-up took an hour, then the next day . . . it all started again! But it was fun to be part of such an extraordinary project.

Why do you think the Cenobites have remained so popular with fans through the years?

Clive created characters that were very intriguing, unique, powerful, sexy, mysterious and deeply disturbing.  I think that’s why the Cenobites have stuck in people’s memories and why they’ve frightened a generation of horror fans over the years.

Are there any current works of horror that impress you?

I must admit, I’m a big fan of older horror films like:
The Thing (Christian Nyby, Howard Hawks 1952)
Invaders from Mars (William Cameron Menzies 1953)
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers  (Don Siegel 1956) Kevin McCarthy
The Horror of Dracula (1958) Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing
Night of the Demon (Jacques Tourneur 1958)  Dana Andrews
The Innocents (1961) – this one is a personal favorite of Doug Bradley as well and it starred Deborah Kerr.  It’s one of those films that prove subtlety and imagination can be ten times more terrifying than loud noises or things that go bump in the night.
The Haunting (Robert Wise 1963) Clare Bloom, Julie Harris (from a Shirley Jackson story)
The Exorcist (William Friedkin 1973) and The Exorcist III (1990)
Don’t Look Now (Nicholas Roeg 1973)
Of course, the original Halloween (Carpenter 1978) was brilliant.

I find organic Sci-fi horror very effective
Alien is a prime example  (Ridley Scott 1979)
The Thing (Carpenter 1982)
Predator (John McTiernan 1987)

My favorite serial killer horror films:
Psycho (Hitchcock 1960)
Se7en (David Fincher 1995)

And my favorite Hellraiser film is the original (1987)

More recent films that I’ve enjoyed are:
Audition  (“Odishon” Takashi Miike 1999)
The Ring (Gore Verbinski 2003)  Naomi Watts
Night Watch (“Nochnoy dozor’) (2004)
Constantine (Francis (I Am Legend) Lawrence 2005)

666: Sequels Gone Wrong- (or learning from mistakes)

Received this today from Reelz channel......

When a horror movie finds success at the box office, it's almost guaranteed to get a sequel. And that sequel often becomes more sequels, which have an unfortunate tendency for becoming increasingly stale. By the time a horror franchise reaches a sixth installment, it's usually operating in zombie mode (meaning, crying out for a beheading).

In less than two weeks, Saw VI heads to theaters — with no plans of wrapping up the series. Saw VII is already in pre-production and plans are in place for Saw VIII. If the Saw franchise has any chance of continuing, it had better learn from the mistakes of other "part six" horror sequels. Here, we offer six critical lessons.

Don't bring back the killer in the most ridiculous way possible

It's hard to keep a good killer down. Friday the 13th's Jason finally got his payback in Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter when he was chopped to bits by a young Corey Feldman. Jason's death almost seemed final when Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning revealed that Jason wasn't Jason at all, but a paramedic dressing up like him to seek revenge.

But then Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives decided to bring the killer back to life — using all of three seconds to devise a plan for his resurrection. How was it done? Tommy, Feldman's character but this time played by Thom Mathews, journeys to Jason's grave to not only make sure he's dead, but also to burn his corpse. Uh, so he's certain Jason is even deader? Once Jason's coffin is unearthed, Tommy takes a pole from the cemetery fence and stabs Jason repeatedly until lightning strikes the pole, reanimating Jason like he's Frankenstein's monster. Seriously.

Sure, it's important for a horror movie to keep its killer around. But can you at least try to keep the audience from feeling cheated? Jigsaw (Tobin Bell) met his doom in Saw III and was "kept around" in Saw IV and V with flashbacks, a plot device being reused for Saw VI. Co-screenwriter Patrick Melton has promised that the Jigsaw flashbacks will "feel organic and not forced." Let's hope he's right.

Bring back fan-favorite characters

In an attempt to win back fans, Hellraiser: Hellseeker reinstated the heroine from the first two movies, Kirsty Cotten (Ashley Laurence). While Hellseeker doesn't totally focus on Laurence, her presence is a needed one ... and one that fans responded to positively. It also helped cover up the fact that Pinhead, the series' demonic killer, barely gets any screen time.

Saw VI sees the return of Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young, Jigsaw's former apprentice. Like Jigsaw, Young died in Saw III and will be used in flashbacks. After appearing mostly as a corpse in Saw IV and V, fans have to be pleased to see Smith get some actual screen time.

READY FOR YET ANOTHER GHOULISH FEARFEST ON AMC?:

This is one of the main reasons why I absolutely love the Halloween season. And it's not because of the trick or treating or people dressing up for one night to scare the crap out of you. What I would rather do is flip the channels and watch AMC's annual Fearfest. During this awesome time period, actors like Bela Lugosi, Vincent Price, Lon Chaney Jr., and Boris Karloff were among the many shown on AMC, some in black and white and others in technicolor.

Well October has arrived, and AMC has another list of incredible movies to show, whether they've been shown more times over in the past or not. At least you get your horror classics once a year, so you can't really complain too much on that.

Below is a list of some of the films being shown during this years Fearfest:

* House on Haunted Hill (1999)
* Blood of Dracula (1957)
* The She-Creature (1956)
* House on Haunted Hill (1999)
* Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
* Young Frankenstein (1974)
* The Amityville Horror (1979)
* The Return of the Living Dead (1985)
* Jack the Ripper (1959)
* The Brain Eaters (1958)
* Dracula (1979)
* Exorcist: The Beginning (2004)
* Wolf (1994)
* The Beast Must Die (1974)
* The Frighteners (1996)
* Raising Cain (1992)
* The Shining (1980)
* Psycho (1998)
* The Innocents (1961)
* The Fly (1958)
* The Fly II (1989)
* Halloween (1978)
* Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster (1965)
* King Kong (1976)
* Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
* Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers (1989)
* And Now the Screaming Starts! (1973)
* Puppetmaster (1989)

The eight-day marathon airs from October 23 until Halloween Day, October 31 from 7:30am-midnight.

A different sort of vampire flick... (Daybreakers)

Ethan Hawke,Sam Neil, Willem Dafoe, Claudia Karvan, Christopher Kirby, Michael Dorman, and Vince Colosimo all star in the upcoming film Daybreakers.

It's now the year of 2017 and a serious plague has turned almost everybody into a vampire and made the blood supply dwindle away to almost nothing.So a researcher teams up with some vamps with the intention of saving the human race. How can they save us? Why doesn't this researcher just produce some synthetic blood for the fiends? They'd become one rich bitch!

Close encounters of The Fourth Kind...(The Fourth Kind)

Universal Pictures The Fourth Kind stars Milla Jovovich, Elias Koteas, Will Patton, and Hakeem Kae Kazim.

The Fourth Kind is a fact-based flick about an ongoing unsolved mystery in Alaska where one town has seen a number of unexplained disappearances during the past 40 years and there are of course claims of a federal cover up. A doctor investigated the phenomenon and was shocked to learn that these were not false memories or mass hallucinations they were actual cases of alien abduction.Hope there were no anal probes involved!

A rescue mission from the beast... (The Fallen)

Rob Walker's The Fallen has Peter Stormare, Tito Ortiz and Ralf Moeller all starring. The new film has several mercenaries and one negative poacher joining forces on a rescue mission and end up battling a legendary immortal beast.

This beast is supposed to guard a grand treasure that one man is determined to find. I wonder what this beast will look like? Is it something old and dealt with before like a huge fire breathing dragon that will need to be slayed by a sword? Or will it be something new and totally unheard of by the like of us humans?

WHAT IS IT THAT BURNS BRIGHT? (BURNING BRIGHT)

Briana Evigan, Meatloaf, Garret Dillahunt all will be characters in the flick Burning Bright. The film centers on a 20 year old girl and her autistic little brother who just so happen to be stuck in a house with a hungry destructive tiger during a hurricane. What? How in the hell does something like this happen?

It's not like people ordinarily have tigers as pets so what the hell is it doing there in the first place? Did they both drop a hit of acid and just think that there is this creature in there? I don't know about this
one folks!

WHAT'S YOUR DEEPEST FEAR? (PSY-OPS)

Psy-Ops is a sci-fi/action thriller that has this US Military Unit that have the knack of exposing their opponents deepest darkest fears.

On a mission to the Amazon Basin they end up just as terrified as they usually make their enemies when they discover something horrifying. Director Scott Stewart will be making his directorial debut with Psy-Ops. I wonder what they will be discovering, any guesses?
There aren't many clues to go by that's for sure. The only thing that is certain is that it has nothing to do with the video game.

ANOTHER 3D FILM.... (BURST 3D)

Lionsgate announced they acquired worldwide distribution rights to Burst 3D. It will be produced by Sam Raimi and Taperts Ghost House Pictures with Neil Marshall directing. You might recognize Neil Marshalls name since he also directed the hit The Descent.

Ghost House partners Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert will produce and Nathan Kahane will executive produce. Why does it take so many people now a days to produce a damn film? I couldn't find any info on the plot or who will be starring in the film so we'll keep you posted!
